Aims

Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) has its root in emotional, mental health or wellbeing issues. The aim of this training is to increase the knowledge, understanding, and skills of practitioners to improve the mental health and wellbeing of young people, to improve achievement and attainment and promote inclusion and access to learning for all.

Content

The training includes 3 sessions. The first 2 sessions require practitioners to watch 2 pre-recorded workshops before attending a ‘live ‘online reconnector session. Practitioners receive a toolkit of resources that accompany the training.  There is an ongoing opportunity to join a community learning network to share practice and problem solve with other settings.

Workshop 1 includes:

  • What EBSA is
  • The risk and resilience factors that impact upon an EBSA Presentation
  • The push and pull factors that add to the complexity of EBSA
  • The introduction of a framework to help children and young people attend school

Workshop 2 focuses on the practical application of this knowledge and understanding and includes:

  • A focus on the key elements that help children return to school/ manage EBSA behaviours
  • Outline of the tools that can assist at different stages of the process (using a case study)  
  • Consideration of your next steps as a practitioner in supporting children and young people presenting with EBSA.
