As a parent/carer, you can request the involvement of a Home Visiting Teacher to help support your child where there may be differences in their development or the progress of their play and learning. This is sometimes referred to as Additional Support Needs. The Home Visiting Teacher Service is available for children from birth to three years of age and could also support your child’s transition into Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) settings. This might be with your childminder, playgroup, day-care centre, a funded nursery placement or a mix of these.
To find out more about the Home Visiting Teacher role download a copy of our service leaflet which includes some frequently asked questions.
If you wish to involve the service, it might be helpful for you to have a conversation with your child’s Health Visitor or you might want to approach us directly. You can consult with a Home Visiting Teacher at any time to discuss their possible involvement.
You can contact us by phone 01463 644 400 or by email highlandcouncilpsychologicalservice@highland.gov.uk
Concerns to consider and mention:
- What are your main concerns and how is this impacting on your child and others.
- What behaviours have been observed which might be causing the concern.
- Is there any other relevant information which you can share, from others involved with your child e.g. Health Visitor, GP, or any other professional.
- What has already been tried to support your child?
- What outcome would you hope for?

‘Just Ask’
Where there is no current involvement of a Home Visiting Teacher, but you have a query about your child’s development, you can access a Home Visiting Teacher through the ‘Just Ask’ enquiry line. This enquiry line is available every Tuesday and Thursday between 1pm and 4pm, for all Highland children, young people, parents, carers and those who work with them. Call us on 0300 303 1365. Please note, this is not a route to requesting involvement, for this you should follow the process outlined above.
